Focus on Me: A Poem
The Little Things
Are there small details about your partner that you notice more than others, something other people might not notice? Whether the little things are those pet peeves that drive you nuts even though you love them, or whether they're the precious little things that you notice and make you love them more, the details are important. Pay attention.
Focus on Me
Does your hand in mine
feel the same
as your gloved one
on a tree stand?
Is it rougher
than the slivers
that splinter
in the wood?
Does the glide
across my palm
calm your heartbeat,
or make it win
its first race?
I bet your nails
trail a path
of unseen rivers
when you think of me.
And my hair's a memory
to your nose, eyes,
mouth, and skin.
Can you name the freckle
that marks my
lower lip?
I know each of your zags,
your craggly cracks, and
crinkly crows feet.
I can feel your pads of skin
on your fingerprints
and know to let you in.
You're no stranger to me.
You're the welcome mat
Home.
Do I feel firm and right
when you come in?
What if I left the front door
unlocked for your inquiring?
Would you come in for the appraisal?
Or is it that glide you seek
on arrival.
I'll give you the glide,
if you keep the memory.
Just stay focused on me.
